Energias de Portugal

Energias de Portugal, or EDP, is among Europe’s major electricity dealers, and one of the largest business groups in Portugal. EDP was the first Iberian based company to own the assets for the generation and distribution of electricity in both Spain and Portugal, with a controlling share in the Spanish based company HC Energia. EDP also has a present in the electricity sectors of Latin America as well as taking a major part in the generation, distribution and trading of electricity in the United States, Brazil, Africa, and Macau.

In addition to its functioning as a major producer and distributer of electricity, EDP also has business interests in the information technology sectors. Other businesses the group deals in are water, gas, engineering, lab testing, real estate management, and vocational training.

As of 2006 a major portion of energy produced by EDP was from renewable sources, and at the conclusion of 2007 EDP stated that 39% of all the energy it produced was emissions-free. In addition they announced that their goal was to have 75% of their energy production to be derived from renewable sources by the year 2013.
