Finland

Overview

Finland is a Nordic country located in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe.It shares borders with Sweden in the west, Norway in the north and Russia in the east, while Estonia sits across the Gulf of Finland to the South.

Finland has a population of 5.4 million people. The majority of the population lives in the southern region. Finland is the eighth largest country in Europe as far as area is concerned and is the EU’s most sparsely populated country. Finland’s government is structured as a parliamentary republic based in Helsinki. There are 342 local municipalities.  Greater Helsinki area (which includes Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa) has around 1 million inhabitants. Close to a third of Finland’s GDP is produced there. Other larger cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, Kuopio and Kouvola.
